Fifty-seven academics from the VUB joined forces. Philosophers, engineers, architects, tax specialists, lawyers, economists, moral and communication scientists, political scientists, … write on the topic Man and Technology from different disciplines. Together they aim to contribute to how the VUB values on equality, freedom and solidarity stand ground in a robotized world. Through 30 thought-provoking questions the book puts forward concrete propositions for an inclusive robot agenda.
Are robots smarter than people? Will you end up with a robot as a workmate? Will you fall head over heels in love with a robot? Will robots be given a license to kill? Do robots make good surgeons? What if athletes become robots? Would you let a robot put your grandmother to bed? Won’t household robots wash your dirty linen in public?
Thanks to cutting-edge technology, our living environment is changing rapidly. The combination of robotics and artificial intelligence has opened up a seemingly endless range of new possibilities, from self-driving cars to sex robots and killer bots. This technological revolution will drastically change our society, just as the industrial revolution did more than 250 years ago.
How does man fit into this technological revolution? More than fifty professors and researchers have taken up this question, studying the ways in which technology can be further developed for the benefit of mankind. The book Homo Roboticus collates their answers and presents an inclusive robotic agenda along with recommendations for the present and the future.
Homo Roboticus is the work of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) think tank POINcaré and was created under the direction of An Jacobs (imec-SMIT, VUB), Lynn Tytgat (weKONEKT.brussels, VUB), Michel Maus (VUB - Bloomlaw), Romain Meeusen (MFYS, VUB), and Bram Vanderborght (Brubotics, VUB).

Zevenvijftig academici van de VUB nemen samen de handschoen op. De filosofen, ingenieurs, architecten, fiscalisten, juristen, economen, moraal- en communicatiewetenschappers, politicologen, … bekijken het thema mens en technologie vanuit verschillende disciplines. Samen willen zij bijdragen hoe de VUB waarden rond gelijkheid, vrijheid en verbondenheid overeind blijven in een gerobotiseerde wereld. Via 30 prikkelende vragen rond het samenleven met robots, komen ze tot concrete stellingen voor een inclusieve robotagenda.
Zijn robots slimmer dan mensen? Krijg je een robot als collega? Word jij halsoverkop verliefd op een robot? Krijgt de robot een license to kill? Is de robot wel een goede chirurg? Wat als atleten robots worden? Laat je een robot jouw grootmoeder in bed stoppen? Zullen huishoudrobots je vuile was niet buiten hangen?
Spitstechnologie doet onze leefwereld in sneltempo evolueren. De combinatie van robotica en artificiële intelligentie boort een schijnbaar eindeloos aanbod van nieuwe mogelijkheden aan, van zelfrijdende auto’s tot en met seksrobots en killerbots. Net zoals de Industriële Revolutie meer dan 250 jaar geleden zal ook deze technologische revolutie onze samenleving drastisch veranderen.
Hoe past de mens in deze technologische revolutie? Meer dan vijftig professoren en onderzoekers zijn met die vraag aan de slag gegaan en hebben bestudeerd hoe technologie verder ten dienste van de mens kan evolueren. Het boek Homo Roboticus bundelt hun antwoorden en brengt een inclusieve robotagenda met aanbevelingen voor heden en toekomst.
